Cannabidiol or CBD is a promising phytocannabinoid found in agricultural hemp. It has been recognized for its benefits on human and animal health and is capable of affecting nearly every biological process. CBD is non-psychotoxic (i.e. it does not result in feelings of euphoria) and has a remarkable safety profile.

CBD is extracted and separated from specific varieties of cannabis, often known as hemp. Chemically, CBD is one of 85 chemical substances known as cannabinoids, which are all found in the cannabis plant. CBD is the second most abundant compound in hemp, typically representing up to 40% of its extracts.
What are the effects of CBD?
Unlike other cannabinoids — such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — CBD does not produce a euphoric “high” or psychoactive effect. This is because CBD does not affect the same receptors as THC. The human body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that receives and translates signals from cannabinoids.
Does CBD get you high?
No. Cannabidiol (CBD) is naturally non-intoxicating. You may feel calmer when taking it as CBD’s effects are more relaxing vs a high feeling. Not only will CBD not get you high, but it actually counteracts the high effects of THC, which is the compound notorious for getting people high.
WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?
Since its discovery in 1992, researchers have been investigating the existence of a central regulatory system called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).
The ECS is made of cannabinoid receptors, endogenous (self-made) cannabis-like compounds and enzymes that create and inactivate them. The ECS is one of the most important physiologic systems involved in establishing and maintaining human health.
Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body. In each tissue, cannabinoids perform different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis, maintaining a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.
So, why is CBD important to the ECS? CBD is important to the ECS because CBD modulates endocannabinoid tone and may help keep healthy people healthy.
